Giant strawberry?!?

Pa en ma zijn een weekje op Texel en ik kom het weekend logeren. Met de trein naar Den Helder en dan met de boot naar Texel, waar ze me al op staan te wachten.

Na een late lunch verkennen we het eiland: shoppen in De Koog, de vuurtoren in d
De Cocksdorp, binnendoor weggetjes om mooie visplekken te vinden voor pa waar 'ie later deze week kan gaan zitten...

Onderweg komen we langs verschillende bordjes die de weg aangeven naar De Reuzenaardbei.

Een reuzenaardbei? Dat klinkt apart. Net zoals van die 'attracties' in Amerikaanse gehuchten, bijvoorbeeld 'the World's Largest Ball of Twine' ofzo (die overigens te vinden is in Branson, Missouri waar ik een aantal keer ben geweest, maar dit heb ik toen toch effe over het hoofd gezien...).

Dus wij op zoek naar de reuzenaardbei. Hoe zou 'ie eruit zien? Een groot fiberglass gevaarte?? En hoe groot is groot? Dit willen we weleens zien!

Na zeker een half uur rondrijden (da's op zich al vrij knap op een eiland van 25x8km... En pa maar braaf onze richtingaanwijzingen opvolgen: 'Daar staat weer een bordje! Hier naar rechts, pa!') was daar ein-de-lijk de Reuzenaardbei: een boerenbedrijf met een kraampje (in de vorm van, inderdaad, een reuzenaardbei...) waar ze aardbeien verkopen. En ook nog een grote kunststof aardbei op het terrein :)

P.S. er blijkt een speciale 'World's Largest'-website te zijn! Handig voor toekomstige tripjes naar de States :)







My mom and dad are vacationing on Texel, one of the Wadden Islands in the north of the Netherlands, this week and I'm staying over for the weekend. I took the train to Den Helder and caught the ferry to Texel, where they picked me up at the pier.

After a late lunch, we decided to explore the island a bit: windowshopping at De Koog, the light tower at De Cocksdorp, little backroads to find the perfect fishing spot for dad to try out later in the week...

While driving, we came across these road signs with 'De Reuzenaardbei' (Giant Strawberry).

Giant strawberry?? That sounds oddly interesting. Reminds me of these American small-town 'attractions' like 'the World Largest Ball of Twine' (which, incidentally, can be found in Branson, Missouri, a town I've visited a few times, but for some reason I always missed said ball of twine...)

So off we go, trying to find this giant strawberry. What would it look like? Some huge fibre glass monstrosity?? And how big are we talking about here? We want to see this thing!

After a good 30 mins of driving around (which is a feat in and of itself on an island that is only 25x8km... And my dad was a saint, diligently following our directions: 'Another sign! Turn right here, dad!') we fi-nal-ly found the Giant Strawberry: turns out it's a strawberry farm with a road-side stall (shaped like, you guessed it, a giant strawberry..) where people can buy fresh strawberries. AND they also had this a big plastic strawberry in the yard to boot :)

P.S. I did some Googling and found a website dedicated to 'World's Largest'-attractions! This may come in handy for future trips to the States...
