Keep Calm and Carry On

Last weekend, my cousin and I visited London for a few days. It was a great trip, and we really lucked out with the weather - I even had to put on some sunscreen at one point!

We both had been to London several times before, but managed to visit a lot of spots we hadn't been to so far which was a lot of fun. Amongst other things, we went to Borough Market, Portobello Rd. and Carnaby St., and did some shopping at one of Europe's largest bookstores (Waterstones on Piccadilly), the M&M-store, Japan Centre at Regent's St. (I think I actually squealed when we stumbled upon it...), Liberty department store and, of course, Harrod's (where I bought a somewhat authentic Japanese bento lunch - it was yummy!).

 At the M&M-store, the cashier tipped us about the Big Egg Hunt. During Lent, 200+ eggs are displayed throughout London this year. We didn't go on a true egg hunt, but did stop at them when we came across them.

We also stopped at 2 (two!) Hummingbird Bakery-shops (at Portobello Rd. and in Soho), where we naturally had to sample the goods ;-)

We stayed at the same hotel my mom and I stayed at 2 years ago, and had dinner at both the wonderful Chinese restaurant and amazing Indian restaurant that my mom and I tried back then. And of course, a trip to the Hard Rock Café was a must as well.

We came across a lot of "Keep Calm and Carry On" merchandise while (window)shopping, and while I was  familiar with the posters already (thanks in large part to Pinterest), I didn't know the story behind it.
Coincidentally, I checked Nienie's blog today, and lo and behold, one of her recent posts was about the origin of this particular catch phrase / poster!

Fowl Dinners

Last week I stumbled across this program by Jamie Oliver via Nienie's blog. It's about the food industry, particularly the egg and poultry industry.



Eye-opening, to say the least.

It got me thinking and:
- I decided to renew my adopt-a-chicken contribution, not just for a year like a few years ago (which I was too lazy to renew...) but open-ended this time so I won't forget to renew it next year.
- when grocery shopping this week, I paid extra attention to buying organic products. It's a work in progress (and I know I won't be able to part with some of my favourite items which aren't organic), but every little bit helps, right? In the past, I already made a point of always buying free range eggs, but from now on I'll also make an increased effort to buy more organic foods.
- This week I made the concious decision to get some vegetarian meat-alternatives for dinner. (some were a bigger success than others...)
Going totally vegetarian isn't an option for me - to be honest, I simply like eating meat too much, and biologically we are omnivores after all (in my opinion, we need some animal-derived products in our diet to stay healthy. To all nay-sayers: I respect your opinion, but I think I know at least a little bit of what I'm talking about since I've been battling chronic vitamin deficiency for some years now)
All in all, I consider being a part-time vegetarian to be a happy medium.
- Cheap meat = animal cruelty. I need to make an effort to buy organic meat. The animals are still killed, but at least they've had a good life and they are killed somewhat humanely.
- Since 2 of my cavies died last November, I've thought of getting 2 new cavies to complete the pack. Instead of buying 2 babies at the pet store, I drove to Utrecht yesterday to adopt 2 rescue cavies. Tommie and Annika have meanwhile bonded and are getting used to their new surroundings. In a few weeks, I'll introduce them to the rest of the pack.

They say "a better world starts with yourself". It's a humble start, but I'm trying to do my part.

Breaking Dawn Part 1 (a.k.a Twilight 4.1)

Part one of the final instalment of the Twilight Saga premiered this week, and of course I had to see it!
I thought the special effects were really cool, I liked the creative solutions for some of the scenes (transformation scene - very CSI) and the honeymoon scene did not disappoint either. All in all very nicely done! Now we'll have to patiently wait another year for Part II... (patience is not my strong suit...)

I know, I'm a bit late jumping on the band wagon since this kinda was 2011's Summer hit...
I'd heard this song on the radio but never realised it was by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera (the combo might seem odd until you know that Adam Levine and Christina were/are both judges on the Voice). Anyways, once I knew the artists, I had to download it - pretty cool song! Until you can't get it out of your head for 3 days straight, that is... ;-)

HP 7-1

Sinds deze week draait de nieuwste Harry Potter in de bioscoop - yay!

This week the latesy Harry Potter hit cinemas - yay!

Remember Me

Het zijn goede RPatzz tijden: afgelopen maand kwam New Moon uit op DVD (hebben!), nu draait Remember Me in de bioscoop en is 'ie bezig met het filmen van Bel Ami (veel setfoto's online!) en op 30 juni gaat Eclipse in première.

Rob werd natuurlijk bekend dankzij het hele Twilight-gebeuren, en Remember Me is iets totáál anders. De recencies zijn wisselend, maar ik vond het best een goede film. Al ben ik waarschijnlijk bevooroordeeld hehehe **kwijl**

Alleen het eind vond ik minder, maar dat komt omdat het (spoiler alert!) niet happy is... En ik ben nu eenmaal een sucker voor happy endings...



Afgelopen weekend had ik een discussie met m'n neef over RPattz, hij snapte er helemaal niks van. Probeer een 30+ heteroseksuele man maar eens te overtuigen waarom 'ie nou zo leuk is - da's dus onmogelijk :-)

Dancing in the Streets

Wat is er leuker dan naar een Motown Tribute show gaan? Naar een Motown Tribute show gaan met korting :)

Een tijdje terug kreeg ik een mailing van het Luxortheater om met korting kaarten te bestellen voor de show Dancing in the Streets. Als soul-liefhebber natuurlijk een geweldige aangelegenheid!

Het was een lekker swingende show met, naar mijn mening, 1 'maar' - de Jackson 5 (toch 1 van Motown's grootste acts) kwamen niet aan bod. Jammer.

Knolraap en lof, schorseneren en prei

Sinds een jaar of 2 heb ik nu (met tussenpozen) een groentenabonnement, in 1e instantie om mezelf te dwingen om meer groenten te eten maar inmiddels is het ook een beetje een sport geworden om met onbekende groenten iets lekkers mee te maken (en soms pakt dat beter uit dan anders...). Er zitten nl. niet alleen de doorsnee bloemkool, boontjes, tomaten en uien in, maar ook zgn. 'vergeten groenten'.

Weleens aardperen op? Schorseneren? Postelein? Pastinaak? Venkel? Ik tot een paar jaar geleden óók niet!







Hier een lekker recept met venkel en schorseneren, en op smulweb staan nog veel meer ideeën voor vergeten groenten.

I've had a veggie-subscription for about 2 years now, on and off. Initially to force myself into eating more vegetables, but since then it has also become a challenge to come up with tasty recipes for ingredients I normally wouldn't have chosen (I must admit that the results aren't always a success...). You see, not only do I get common veggies such as cauliflower, green beans, tomotoes and onions, but also so-called 'forgotten vegetables'.

Ever had Jerusalem artichokes? Black salsify? Purslane?
Parsnips? Fennel? Neither did I up until recently...

You can find tons of great recipes online for these uncommon veggies. In the Netherlands, veggie-subscriptions are offered by Bio aan Huis, Odin and Vitatas, amongst others.

And let's not forget Drs. P's classic song "Knolraap en lof, schorseneren en prei" :-)

Muse

Na de boeken en de film was het tijd voor muziek: de Twilight soundtrack. En ik heb er meteen een nieuwe obsessie bij: Muse. Al ken ik slechts 1 liedje van ze, Supermassive Black Hole.

Mijn soort muziek: stevige beats en snerpende gitaren :)
(al is de video niet helemaal mijn ding...)


Ook Robert Pattinson heeft een nummer op de soundtrack - Never Think.
Helemaal niet onaardig! Beetje folk-, country-achtig.



After having read the books and having seen the movie (twice!), it was time for some music. So I got the Twilight soundtrack. Which brought on an entirely NEW obsession: Muse, even though I only know 1 of their songs, Supermassive Black Hole.

It totally rocks! My type of music: beating drums and screaming guitars :)
(although I must admit the music video isn't really my taste...)

Robert Pattinson also has a song on the soundtrack - Never Think.
Not bad at all, a bit folksy, country & western-y...

Het is officieel: ik heb er een 'crush' bij.

Vanavond ben ik naar de film geweest. Hij draait hier niet in de bioscoop, dus dan maar naar Rotterdam.

Ik had verschillende niet al te positieve recensies gelezen, en ik moet zeggen dat de film me alles meeviel. Uiteraard kwam niet alles uit het boek aan bod (da's nooit zo), maar Bella en Edward hadden voldoende chemistry, en er was genoeg spanning en humor. En het 'uitzicht' viel dus ook niet tegen, hahaha! Hij doet me een beetje denken aan James Dean...

Tijdens het surfen ben ik ook op de site van Stephenie Meyer gestuit, de auteur van de serie. Omdat de draft van deel 5 was uitgelekt, heeft ze 'm op haar site gepubliceerd. Het is het verhaal van boek 1 (Twilight) maar dan vanuit Edward's perspectief. Een must-read voor de fans, en hij is hier te lezen.

Grappig: op Yahoo News waren de 'headlines' deze week dat actrice Eartha Kitt was overleden, dat toneelschrijver Harold Pinter was overleden en dat Robert Pattinson naar de kapper was geweest. Serieus!

It's official: I've got a new crush.

Robert Pattinson. Better known as Edward Cullen from the movie 'Twilight'.

This evening I went to see the film. It's not playing here in town, so I went to Rotterdam instead.

I'd read a number of not too positive reveiews and I must say I didn't think the movie was too bad. Of course not every little thing was covered (it never is in these kinds of adaptations), but Bella and Edward did have chemistry, and there was sufficient action and humour. And of course the 'view' wasn't too bad either, hahaha! He kind of reminds me of James Dean...

While surfing the net I came across author Stephenie Meyer's site. Apparently the rough draft for book 5 was leaked and published online, so she decided to post it on her website for fans to read. It's the story from the first book (Twilight), told from Edward's perspective. A must-read for fans! It's posted here.

Funny: this week's headlines on Yahoo News were that actress Eartha Kitt had died, that playwright Harold Pinter had died and that Robert Pattinson got a haircut. Seriously!

Must-see movie

'k Heb van het weekend voor de 2e keer Atonement gekeken, geleend van een collega.

In 1 woord: GE-WEL-DIG. Je dénkt dat 'ie een happy end heeft, maar dan blijkt dat het allemaal toch iets anders is gelopen. Indrukwekkend. Heb meteen ook het boek gekocht.

En nu heb ik nog een major crush op James McAvoy ook ;)



Borrowed Atonement from a colleague and saw it for the 2nd time this weekend.

In 1 word: A-MA-ZING. You THINK it'll have a happy ending, but then there's a twist. Very impressive. I couldn't resist and bought the book too.

And now I have a major crush on James McAvoy to boot... ;)

Hairspray

Ik ben normaal niet zo van de musicals. Nou ja, de filmversie van Grease vind ik erg leuk, en the Sound of Music ook. Ik ben naar de Lion King in Scheveningen geweest en die was geweldig (was vooral onder de indruk van de kostuums). Maar de film Chicago vond ik nogal tegenvallen (ondanks de Oscars), Beauty en de Beast was wel OK en van Starlight Express en Aida was ik nou niet zo onder de indruk. Knap gedaan, dat wel, maar niet mijn ding.

Toen Hairspray werd verfilmd als musical had ik zo mijn twijfels. Ik kende het origineel van John Waters met Ricki Lake en vroeg me af of deze versie net zo goed zou zijn.

Dat is niet het geval. Hij is nl. veel beter!! De muziek is superaanstekelijk (terwijl ik dáár normaal juist niet van hou), Tracy is een schatje, Link een lekker ding, en John Travolta in een torselet is hilarisch! Ik heb 'm nu al zo'n 5x gezien en daar zal het waarschijnlijk niet bij blijven...



I normally don't particularly like musicals. Sure, I love Grease (who doesn't?) and the Sound of Music. I've seen the Lion King in the theater, which was awesome (especially liked the costumes). But I wasn't impressed with the movie Chicago (despite the Oscars), and the other shows I've seen live were either OK (Beauty and the Beast) or didn't float my boat at all (Starlight Express and Aida). Sure, they were well put together, but they're just not my thing I guess.

When Hairspray was remade into a movie musical I was a bit sceptical. I know the original by John Waters starring Ricki Lake and didn't know what to expect: could it be as good as the original?

It's not. It's a whole lot better! Great songs you can't get out of your head (and they are usually my least favourite part of a musical...), Tracy is a cutie, Link a stud, and John Travolta in ladies underwear ia hilarious! I think I've already seen it 5 times so far and I'm sure it'll be more...

Indy

We hebben er bijna 20 jaar op moeten wachten maar gisteravond ging eindelijk Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in Nederland première. De Indiana Jones-trilogie behoort tot mijn favoriete films (ik heb zelfs een tijdje overwogen om archeologie te gaan studeren...), dus uiteraard wilde ik dit 4e deel in de bios zien. Samen met ma en Bep ben ik gisteravond meteen al geweest.

En hij was leuk! Beetje ongeloofwaardig verhaal, dat wel (aliens?!?) maar het gaat niet om een diepzinnig plot maar vooral om de actie en de humor. En daarmee zit het hartstikke goed!



We´ve had to wait nearly 20 years but last night Indy 4 premiered in Holland. The previous 3 films are among my favourites (I even contemplated studying archeology for awhile...), so it was no question that I wanted to go see this movie. Mom, Bep and I went to see it on the first night at the theater.

I thought it was a lot of fun! The story is a bit farfetched (aliens?!?) but it´s not about a deep plot here but about all the action and humour. And there´s not wrong with that!

Lisa Bearnson's April Kit of the Month

Sinds een jaar geeft Creating Keepsakes iedere maand een Kit of the Month (KotM) uit, en tot nu toe had ik 'm nog nooit besteld (alhoewel ik nog spijt heb van het feit dat ik degene die door Ali Edwards was ontworpen aan m'n neus voorbij heb laten gaan...)

Enniewee, op Ali's blog stond een leuk voorbeeld met wat zij ermee heeft gedaan, en toen moest ik 'm natuurlijk ook hebben ;) En gisteren werd 'ie eindelijk bezorgd.

Reduced Shakespeare Company rules!

Vanavond met moeders naar The Reduced Shakespeare Company's nieuwe show 'Completely Hollywood' geweest in de Stoep. Ik heb hun eerdere show 'The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)' 2x live gezien en ook op DVD aangeschaft. Ze zijn echt hilarisch! Helaas begaf de batterij van m'n fototoestel het net toen ze na de show in de foyer waren...



My mom and I saw the Reduced Shakespeare Company's new show 'Completely Hollywood' tonight. I've seen their previous show 'The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)' live twice and even got their DVD. They are simply hilarious! Unfortunately the batteries of my camera died when I wanted to take a picture of them in the foyer afterwards...
