I read about a cooking event at the Kunsthal in a local magazine. Tens of eco companies from the area would attend this event, which made my mom and I curious.
We had no idea what to expect and were quite surprised about the number of stalls as well as the large number of visitors. You name it, and it was there: companies specializing in wine, cheeses, chocolate, eco veggies, special breads, mushrooms, honey, sauces, British pies... We spend a lot of time tasting and buying stuff :)
After a few hours, the crowd sort of got to us, so we decided to head home with our purchases. But it definately is something I would want to mark on my calendar for next year!

************************************************************************************
I've had a veggie-subscription for about 2 years now, on and off. Initially to force myself into eating more vegetables, but since then it has also become a challenge to come up with tasty recipes for ingredients I normally wouldn't have chosen (I must admit that the results aren't always a success...). You see, not only do I get common veggies such as cauliflower, green beans, tomotoes and onions, but also so-called 'forgotten vegetables'.
Ever had Jerusalem artichokes? Black salsify? Purslane?
Parsnips? Fennel? Neither did I up until recently...
You can find tons of great recipes online for these uncommon veggies. In the Netherlands, veggie-subscriptions are offered by Bio aan Huis, Odin and Vitatas, amongst others.
And let's not forget Drs. P's classic song "Knolraap en lof, schorseneren en prei" :-)

Tostis with a twist
About a year ago a grilled-sandwich-shop opened near the office and before I started bringing my own lunch to work, I used to go there quite often. I'm more into hot than cold sandwiches I guess ;)
My parents have had a sandwich maker for ages and hardly ever used it. So I recently confiscated it. This weekend I tried it out for the first time.
First creation: a variation of the sandwich I had last week, brown casino bread with mango chutney, chicken, slices of mango and cheese. YUM!
Second creation: brown casino bread with chocolate spread and slices of banana. Not bad at all!
Next I'll be trying out my usual order at the grilled-sandwich-place: pesto, chicken, tomato and mozarella.

almost caved, cooking galore + more Bento
Bijna.

Yesterday I decided to drive across the bridge to go shopping in Hoogvliet after my drumming lesson. Of course I had to pop by the local pet store too and they had the cutest little white-and-red-curly-haired cavy girl! Honestly, I amost caved.
Almost.
Because when I asked to hold her for a minute, I noticed an odd spot near her nose. According to the sales girl (I'm paraphrasing here) it was "mange, but every cavy caries that with them and it appears when they are stressed, but we're treating her for that".
Right. In other words: nothing to worry about and we don't mind selling somebody a sick animal.
The word 'mange' tends to make me really apprehensive, especially since I know Lily was treated for over 2 months (!) before that particular store felt confident enough to sell her (and even then I had my doubts, but hey, I was in love ;) And truth be told, she may have had some health problems since I got her but they weren't mange-related). And now this store acts like it's no big deal! mange is not only torture for the animal but also contagious to people. Imagine that some unsuspecting customer buys this animal, they'll immediately need to hand over some serious cash to the vet...
At that time I was actually so taken aback that I really didn't know what to do. Except hand back this cutie (with pain in my heart) because I've had my share of vet visits this year. And I stopped at the nearest restaurant to wash my hands at their restroom...
Today I did a lot of cooking!
Set the timer of the bread machine last night so I woke up to the wonderfull smell of fresh bread. This week's bag 'o veggies had some rhubarb in it which I decided to make into a compote. YUM!
I recently bought a packet of quiche dough mix, (quiche freezes well, so ideal for a lunchbox!) and instead of making 1 large one, I used a muffin pan to make 9 small ones (with a vegetarian filling of onion, pepper, mushroom and peas). Once they were done, I let them cool down, wrapped them individually and put them in the freezer.
I also had some fennel from last week's bag left, so I made beefstrips with fennel, union and carrot with panfried potatoes for dinner. The entire kitchen counter is covered with dirty dishes ;) (fortunately I've got a 'helper' to get rid of it)
Rhubarb compote:
rhubarb, peeled and cut into pieces of approx. 3cm/1,25inch
sugar (I used 100g/4oz to 400g/16oz of rhubarb)
cinnamon stick
Wash the rhubarb and put into a pan. Do NOT add extra water as the rhubarb will release a lot of liquid when cooking. Add the sugar and cinnamon stick and let simmer for approx. 30 min. Remove the cinnamon stick and let cool completely.
Eat by itself, with custard or use as a pie filling.
Except cooking, I also browsed the Net for Bento-releated stuff. And I gave in and bought some things at EBay... Can't wait until they get here! (It's being shipped from the US and Japan)
Bijna.

Eggplant convert
1 aubergine in blokjes
3 tl knoflookpasta
2 blikjes tomatenblokjes, uitgelekt
2 el witte wijnazijn
1 tl komijnpoeder
1 tl suiker
olijfolie
chilipoeder naar smaak
peterselie (uit een potje)
zout

I don´t really care for eggplant. Too bitter, too soggy... all in all not very nice. You can imagine my surprise when I tatsted this amazing dip at Bazar recently and found out that it contained eggplant!
What I gathered from the menu was that it was called Zaalouk (which, officially, is a Moroccan eggplant SALAD and not a dip). I did some surfing, printed out a recipe, adapted it to my own taste (i.e. added some sugar to balance out the vinegar) and went a-cookin´!
1 eggplant, cut in cubes
3 tsp garlic paste
2 cans of tomatoes, drained
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp sugar
olive oil
chili powder
parsley (dried is fine)
salt
Boil the eggplant cubes in plenty of salted water for approx. 30 min. so they are nice and soft. Drain and mash with a fork.
Meanwhile, sauté the garlic in some olive oil and add the tomatoes. Simmer for about 15 min. without a lid until most of the moisture has evaporated and the tomatoes have broken down. Add vinegar, cumin, chili powder, parsley and eggplant, mix and season to taste with some salt and sugar.
Serve hot or cold with some pita bread for dipping and some hummus. YUM!

Pioneer Woman

While browsing the net I came across the site of Pioneer Woman. Such a cool gal! She has a 'normal' blog with funny stories as well as awesome photo's (some of which you can download for free) and a recipe blog with great recipes (including step-by-step instructions for the culinary-challenged among us)
Really worth a visit!

Traditions

- rode wijn
- suiker
- kaneelstokje
Our family doesn't uphold many traditions, but 2 things are a given with Christmas:
1) the 3 of us unwrap our presents on Christmas Eve.
2) whatever else is on the menu, there are cooking pears for dessert.
This year there were many presents for me under my mom's tree: a China travelling guide, the 7th Harry Potter book in Dutch (the English version has been in my book case since July...), the latest Harry Potter DVD, a windshield frost remover and parking meter, windshield wiper fluid, a case for NDS games, an MP3 player, an Audrey Hepburn calender and a retro napkin holder (in case I ever get that 60's kitchen I've always wanted...)
I'm 'celebrating' the holidays itself at home this year: the last few days have been so busy that I just want to veg out and do nothing special (bit of scapbooking, bit of cavy-cuddling, bit of reading, bit of movie watching..._
There were some cooking pears in my bag o'veggies this week too. They have been on the stove all evening and I'm happy to report that I can make them too: they're really yummie!
The recipe:
- cooking pears, peeled, quartered, core removed (we always use Gieser Wildeman pears)
- red wine
- sugar
- cinnamon stick
Put the pears in a pan with a little bit of water, a good splash of wine, a few tablespoons of sugar and the cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil and let them gently simmer for a few hours until the pears are nice and red. Serve chilled.

What's Cookin'?

de kok legt uit wat we gaan doen / the chef explains what we're about to do

het menu / the menu

Ana Maria, Bert, ik en Floor aan het werk / Ana Maria, Bert, me and Floor hard at work

Ramon komt erachter dat pizzadeeg nog best lastig te maken is / Ramon finds out that making pizza dough is more difficult than he expected

Daniel, Piet & Dian

Orlando & Ana Maria openen de St Jacobsschelpen / Orlando & Ana Maria preparing the scallops

Ramon & Peter druk bezig met de mini-pizza's / Ramon & Peter busy with their mini-pizza's

chefkok Piet, Marja, Rien & Bert maken de saus voor het dessert / chef Piet, Marja, Rien & Bert making the sauce for our dessert

chefkok Piet, Floor, Dian, Piet & Daniel maken het hoofdgerecht op / chef Piet, Floor, Dian, Piet & Daniel plating the main course

v.l.n.r. / l.t.r.: Floor, Orlando, Peter, Rien, Marja, Dian, Bert (hardly visible...), Daniel, Piet (behind Ramon) & Ramon.
The year is almost over so we had to hurry and organize a social event for our team! Dian and I did some brainstorming and ended up with a cooking workshop: cook together first and then eat our own creations. (my idea of attending a drum workshop oddly did not get the enthusiastic response I had hoped...)
During my vacation, Dian arranged the whole thing and yesterday evening was THE night! Apart from a few colleagues, everybody was there and we had a really good time. And the food was tasty too!

Books & pie

Since I got the new cavy cage I still had some boxes with books etc. in the living room. So today my dad and I went to Ikea to get some bookcases. We spent most of the afternoon putting them together and I've also already put everything in them - am so pleased!
This evening I also baked two pies for my colleagues since it was my birthday yesterday: American pumpkin pie and 'ordinary' apple pie. I had so much pumpkin left over that I also made pumpkin soup - quite tasty!
(edited 4/12/07: the pumpkin pie didn't turn out as good as it was supposed to, but fortunately I also brought 'boterletter', a typical Dutch December sweet which is basically a big puff pastry letter filled with sweet almond paste)

Woke up this morning...

... with the smell of freshly baked bread!
I hardly ever use my breadmachine but while doing groceries yesterday I saw that AH now also has LARGE bags of breadmix. So on a whim I got one and while watching TV at night I decided to set the timer so that I would have a freshly baked loaf of bread when I woke up!
So for brunch I'll be having homebaked bread with eggs (haven't decided yet whether to boil, fry or scramble them, but that's ok ;) ) YUM!

Bag o' veggies

I'm not a veggie kind of girl. It sometimes happens that days go by without me touching any at all... In order to change this (and prevent my teeth falling out from scurvy...) I've tried a number of things: I collect vegetarian cookbooks for inspiration, and I eat lunch at the company restaurant regularly. But usually I fall back in the same veggie-less state after a couple of days...
My latest 'brainwave': a veggie subscription! Every week there's a bag of season produce waiting at the healthstore. It's a surprise what's in it, and to help you along they include several recipes. You can sign up for several different bags: for 1 or 2 persons, a family bag, fruit only etc.
But I know myself by now, and I tend to get very enthusiastic very quickly. Then, after a few days, I lose interest... So in order not to commit myself for too long a period at once, I decided to sign up for a 4-week trial subscription first.
Today I picked up my first bag, and I have to admit that I'm not at all disappointed. I initially thought that there might be all kinds of weird vegetables in it, but that wasn't the case. The bag included: Chinese cabbage, iceberg lettuce, a courgette, a sweet potato, 2 Royal Gala apples and a small mellon. I think I might be able to make this work! ;)
