Minus 10%

Almost 9 months ago to the day, I had had enough (again) and decided to lose weight (again).
A lot has happened since then, and eating healthily has not always been on the top of my priority list. But I faithfully kept attending the local Weight Watchers meetings (I guess I need that kick in the butt!). With result, because as of today, I've lost 10% of my initial weight! Woohoo!
I still have a long way to go, and I'm not losing it as fast as I would sometimes like, but I'm slowly but surely getting there! Go me! ;-)

Busy day

I had a busy day today, running from one medical professional to another...
First, I had an appointment with my GP to talk about my burnout-symptoms. Then I went to have my blood tested for my vitamin- and cholesterol levels (the results will be in on Monday). And finally I had an appointment at the dermatologist to have some blemishes removed (fortunately I came up clean a few months ago when I went for my BCC check-up).

I'm exhausted!

Burnout

It's been a hectic few months at work, it's been hectic in my personal life and my vitamin D is still extremely low, which isn't helping matters one bit!
So, all in all, it's not too surprising that when things slowed down at work a few weeks ago and we were somewhat getting back into our groove in our family, the sh*t hit the proverbial fan. It's like when people get migraines in the weekend or suffer a heart attack during their vacation because their bodies get to wind down from the day-to-day stress.

The good thing is that I didn't get above-mentioned heart attack. The bad thing is that I sort of experienced a mental breakdown remeniscent of my burnout 5 years ago.
Work I could have handled. The deaths of my grandparents as well. Even coping with the effects of my vitamin deficiency would not have been a problem. Just not all AT THE SAME TIME!

So I'm taking a short break, as per doctor's orders. I took a few days off work and will start working half days next week. I took an (already planned) trip to the island of Texel this past week to empty my mind and relax.

It worked. I'm already starting to feel better.
I'm not quite there yet but I think I stepped on the break in time before I got to the point of no return.

One of the benefits of a burnout? At least you recognize the signs the next time, before things get too much out of hand...

Cancer sucks (2)

************************************************************************************

Although his doctors were convinced a few months ago that the spots they had noticed on my grandfather's lungs were caused by inflammations, they have now had to take back that assessment.

This past week, he went for another check-up and the spots appeared to have gotten bigger: a sign that they are, in fact, tumors instead of inflammations.
Soon the next course of treatment will be determined, so we'll have to wait what the doctors decide then.

That is not the only disappointment my granddad faced these recent weeks. He took another tumble with his bike, which, fortunately only left him with some scrapes and bruises, but his GP more or less forbade him to go cycling anymore, since another fall could have severe consequences.

Not surprisingly this has left him feeling depressed. It's very well possible that our shared birthday in December will be the last we celebrate together...

Cancer sucks

***********************************************************************************

A while back I visited the dermatologist to have some moles removed, purely for cosmetic reasons (apparently I'm more vain than I'd like to admit...). They removed a few cells from one spot for testing, and today I had the appointment to have the spot completely removed.
Initially I thought it was a precaution because the spot might become a problem in the future, so imagine my surprise when I was told it already was skin cancer. A non-life-threatening form of skin cancer (a so-called basal cell carcinoma), but skin cancer nonetheless so it does make you think.

Unfortunately cancer has reared its ugly head a lot around me these past 18 months or so:
- a colleague of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer in January of last year. She underwent treatment all year, which fortunately went well, and has slowly been making a comeback at work for a few months now.
- around the same time, the aunt of a former colleague was diagnosed with breast cancer as well. Unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for her and she died 2 months later.
- in May of last year, my granddad was diagnosed with lung cancer. So far the treatment seemed to be effective, but on his last check-up they noticed some new spots on his lungs. He has a doctor’s appointment next week to discuss the options.
- an acquaintance I know through scrapbooking was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year. They caught it in time and after extensive treatment, she’s been pronounced ‘clean’.
- during the summer, a colleague’s uncle died of cancer. There was no further treatment possible, and he made the choice to be euthanized.
- last August, the sister of one of my aunts (by marriage) lost one of her breasts due to breast cancer.
- ai autumn, a former colleague lost the battle to skin cancer.
- around November, one of my dad’s friends and colleagues was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer. He died a few weeks ago.

It’s almost enough to make you depressed…

Hiatus

a) 6/4: het verhuisbedrijf komt 140 (!) verhuisdozen brengen.

Woohoo - NOT.

Guess what? It isn't B12 after all...

Went to the hospital again today for the results of my last bloodtests.

Guess what? Although my B12-levels are a on the lower end of the scale, it probably isn't what is causing the problems. It turns out my vitamin D levels are way too low!
Ironically I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible since, being a freckled redhead, I run about 10x more risk to develop skin cancer. It appears I've been a bit TOO carefull though... So: vitamin pills, sunshine and oily fish it is.

I have another appointment in 3 months to see if things have improved.

B12 - again

Two months after submitting my referral letter, I was finally allowed to see a doctor at the hospital yesterday.
My mom had very kindly offered to go with me, not to hold my hand but to keep me company and an extra set of ears is always handly when your given lots of info...

We talked to the doctor for about half an hour, and he performed some tests (blood pressure etc). I also had to have some blood drawn for new blood tests. The next appointment is set for 2 weeks from now, to discuss the results from the blood tests and come up with a treatment plan.

At least there's progress!

B12 - continued

Mijn B12 waarde is opnieuw omlaag gegaan.

Called my GP today for the result of Monday's blood test. My B12 has gone down again (was 90, then 190 after taking the vitamin pills, and now back to 120). The GP will write a referral so I can go to the hospital for further testing to see what causes this and what is the best treatment.

Pain in the b*tt

Of liever: m'n kont.

Paracetamolletje genomen.

I know, I should have just gone to bed on time, like I planned, and none of this would have happened. But no, just needed to do some of this, and that, and before you know it, BAM - pain in my back. Or rather: in my butt. I didn't know I even had muscles there... And I didn't do anything strange, I was just WALKING through my apartment...

Anyways, lay awake ALL NIGHT because of the pain: I could hardly sit, I could hardly walk (knees shaking), I could hardly lay down. In other words: I was feeling very old and sickly and sorry for myself... Took a pain killer. And another one. And then, around 5, I had had it and called the doctor-on-call. Who faxed a presciption to the emergency pharmacy. And luckily my dad had worked the late shift and, as it turned out, had trouble getting to sleep, so he didn't mind driving there to get the medicine and bring it over to me at this unholy hour.

Suppositories. Wonderful. And so well thought through too, when a person can hardly move - NOT. I managed, eventually. Don't ask.

Called work to call in sick (the 2nd time in 2 weeks - we're on a roll...). Called the doctor to switch the appointment I had for tomorrow regarding the B12-situation to today. Took a short nap. Went to the doctor (left very early - it's across the street but I wasn't exactly mobile...). Diagnosis: just a muscle behaving badly. I had already had visions of a slipped disc, so it didn't turn out too badly. Got new pills (to be taken ORALLY this time) And talked a bit about my B12 too.

The numbers from the tests were OK (resp. 190 for the B12 and 7,5 for the folic acid), but I don't feel too sure about the B12-result. I think the vitamin supplements may give a false indication that everything is fine.
The other results weren't back yet, so we agreed to talk them over when they're in and take it from there. For now I'm off the supplements so we can check again in a few weeks to see whether the numbers have gone down again. If so, it's time to see a specialist, who will also be able to do the HOLO TC test (amongst other things) that I want to have done, which makes a distinction between the different types of B12 in your blood giving you a more accurate reading. I'll probably also have to undergo a stomach examination, which I'm not particularly looking forward to...

In the course of today, my backpain has gotten a bit more bearable, but it's not gone yet. When I've sat or laid down for a while, it takes a while to get up again. I'm still pretty sore. (And today, of all days, all these people that I don't know and don't WANT to know rang the doorbell to sell stuff etc). Whether or not I decide to go to work tomorrow all depends on how I'll make it through the night...

3 times a charm

Dus... morgen gaan we poging nr. 3 doen. Rond 10-en. Nuchter. Ben benieuwd...

It's been a month since my last blood test, so time to test my B12 values again. According to a Dutch B12-website, it is recommended also to test on some other things as well.
So I'd made an appointment for last Monday to have my blood tested, but silly me, I'd eaten something which was a big no-no! They also weren't able to test on 1 of the other things I wanted to have checked out, so they referred me to Star, a specialized center for blood testing.
On Wednesday I got up VERY early, so I could be at Star before work, and I was there just after 7 a.m. (!). However, One of the bloodsamples needed to be stored on ice, which they couldn't do, and the courier wouldn't be there until 10 a.m. If I wouldn't mind coming by some other day, around 10-ish??

So... tomorrow will be my third attempt. I'll go there, around 10. With an empty stomach. Fingers crossed...

22/07/2008

Woohoo! I'm not crazy after all!

For a while I have had these vague complaints. Tired. Clumsy coordination. Absent-minded (more than usual). Two years ago I already went to see my GP and the bottom line was that I was being to stressfull and that I needed to find a way to relax more.

About 3 months ago I met this fellow scrapper who told me about vitamin B12-deficiency. I recognised a lot from her story. So I went to my GP and he agreed to have my blood tested.

Yesterday I got the results, and guess what? While 'normal' people have a score between 150 and 350, I'm way down at 90.
Of course I'd rather be completely healthy, but at the same time it's such a relief to know that, no, it's not just in my head, I'm not a drama queen, I have a real medical condition!

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products, so vegans need to take supplements to get their daily dose. If, like me, you do eat meat and dairy, it usually means your body, for some reason, no longer absorbs it from your food. Going on a special diet or taking supplements is therefore useless 'cause it takes the same route through your both as your food does... The best solution are injections. For the rest of your life. Because this condition is permanent.

But before sticking needles in me, my GP wants to test whether it's really not caused by my normal diet. To meet him halfway I've agreed to take vitamin supplements for a month and then do another blood test. I'm not really pleased about it and I doubt whether it'll do me any good, but hey.

To be continued...
