Rock chick

************************************************************************************

I started bass guitar lessons last week, something I've been wanting to do for a while now. For the time being, I've stopped with my drum lessons so I can focus on this.

But... in order to play, you need an instrument. So today I went to the music store to get myself a bass guitar, an early birthday present from my parents :)

And this is my new toy.

Now all I have to do is learn how to play it...

I read about a cooking event at the Kunsthal in a local magazine. Tens of eco companies from the area would attend this event, which made my mom and I curious.

We had no idea what to expect and were quite surprised about the number of stalls as well as the large number of visitors. You name it, and it was there: companies specializing in wine, cheeses, chocolate, eco veggies, special breads, mushrooms, honey, sauces, British pies... We spend a lot of time tasting and buying stuff :)

After a few hours, the crowd sort of got to us, so we decided to head home with our purchases. But it definately is something I would want to mark on my calendar for next year!

Dolfinarium

I had never been there before, so when a colleague offered me a discount coupon it was the perfect excuse to visit.

Mom and I had purposely selected a relatively quiet day (according to the park's website) and fortunately the weather was very nice.

Although the park isn't very large, there are lots of shows to visit. We decided to make made a bit of a planning of which shows we wanted to see when we first entered the park, which wasn't a bad idea at all.

I liked the Ray Reef, where you could 'pet' rays and small sharks, the best. Although it did feel weird to touch their skin...

Redhead Day

Today was the 5th annual Redhead Day in Breda. What started in 2005 as a photographer's call for redheaded models, has become an event with 1000s of attendants from the Netherlands and far beyond.

Due to the expected number of visitors, I decided to take the train instead of my car. And as usual when I travel in that direction (which only happens once every few years, but still...), there was a delay. Something was amiss with a tunnel outside Rotterdam and no trains were allowed to pass through.

Since I already purchased my train ticket, and going home to get my car would take at least 45 mins, I decided to take the alternative route by train via Utrecht and Den Bosch. The trip from Rotterdam to Breda usually only takes about 30 mins. It took me well over 2hrs...

But, I made it and had a nice time nonetheless. Quite a sight to see so many redheads at one place.
There were photographers available to take glamour-shots, you could get colour-advice for your wardrobe, there were fashion shows and live performances...
I enjoyed the lecture about the origin of red hair from a renowned professor/dermatologist the most. Apparently some 50.000 yeras ago, during the last ice age, there was a gene-mutation to allow people in the northern countries to absorb vitamin D more easily (hmmm, something must have gone wrong with me in that regard...)

He also addressed some facts and myths about red hair:
- Approximately 2% of the world's population have red hair. In the Benelux, it's about 4%, and Scotland tops the ranks with 13%.
- Research has shown that redheads do need a higher dose of pain medication than non-redheads.
- red hair was very popular during the Classical Era: redheaded slaves were much more valuable than 'ordinary' slaves.
- redheads are not on the brink of extinction, as claimed in recent years. There will always be people that carry the gene, and when both parents are carriers they will have a high probability of having a redheaded child (even if they themselves do not have red hair).
- the image of having a fiery temperament is probably due to the Romans who encountered large numbers of redheaded warriors led by redheaded Queen Boudicea while trying to conquer the British Isles... Or it could simply be due to the assertiveness of redheads when having to endure another comment about their hair colour...

Parody

I guess it was unavoidable: after the cartoon-bunny versions of Twilight (and now New Moon as well), they made a spoof of the Twilight-saga, similar to e.g. Scary Movie, Vampires Suck.
Apparently it had the 2nd highest number of moviegoers in the US last week, after The Expendables...

Giant strawberry?!?

Hoe zou 'ie eruit zien?

My mom and dad are vacationing on Texel, one of the Wadden Islands in the north of the Netherlands, this week and I'm staying over for the weekend. I took the train to Den Helder and caught the ferry to Texel, where they picked me up at the pier.

After a late lunch, we decided to explore the island a bit: windowshopping at De Koog, the light tower at De Cocksdorp, little backroads to find the perfect fishing spot for dad to try out later in the week...

While driving, we came across these road signs with 'De Reuzenaardbei' (Giant Strawberry).

Giant strawberry?? That sounds oddly interesting. Reminds me of these American small-town 'attractions' like 'the World Largest Ball of Twine' (which, incidentally, can be found in Branson, Missouri, a town I've visited a few times, but for some reason I always missed said ball of twine...)

So off we go, trying to find this giant strawberry. What would it look like? Some huge fibre glass monstrosity?? And how big are we talking about here? We want to see this thing!

After a good 30 mins of driving around (which is a feat in and of itself on an island that is only 25x8km... And my dad was a saint, diligently following our directions: 'Another sign! Turn right here, dad!') we fi-nal-ly found the Giant Strawberry: turns out it's a strawberry farm with a road-side stall (shaped like, you guessed it, a giant strawberry..) where people can buy fresh strawberries. AND they also had this a big plastic strawberry in the yard to boot :)

P.S. I did some Googling and found a website dedicated to 'World's Largest'-attractions! This may come in handy for future trips to the States...

Hilarious!

Ik las dit fanfiction verhaal online waarin wordt verwezen naar de website 'Texts From Last Night', een verzameling waargebeurde sms-jes.

In één woord: HI-LA-RISCH!

I was reading this fanfic story online that mentioned the website 'Texts From Last Night', which is a collection of real-life text messages.

One word: HI-LA-RIOUS!

Madness

The Dutch in the WorldCup final, who would have thought?? Not me, that's for sure.
And the longer they stayed in the tournament, the more orange-coloured Holland got...

I watched the match at my parents' home with my aunt & uncle, cousin and another uncle. I'm not really into football, so I enjoyed watching their reactions more than I did the actual game: except my dad and aunt, the rest is super competative :) My cousin said he hadn't been this nervous about a match in years...

The match itself wasn't very nice (my dad claimed he would have switched off the tv in a heart beat if it hadn't been a WorldCup final...), and in the end it came down to the last minutes of the game.

Another go in 4 years??

Three times a charm

... but when Gramps ends up in the hospital three times in one month, a bit of the charm gets lost.
First his GP sent him along because his heart rate was irregular, the following week was his scheduled check-up appointment for his lungs (fortunately everything looked OK) and then 2 weeks later he was test riding his new electrical bike and took a tumble, causing a broken elbow.

I sent him a get-well-card last week. And asked whether he was eligible for some kind of frequent visitor discount already...
