Welcome to the world Danny
Hier is Nancy 1,5 maand geleden, tijdens haar moeder's verjaardag:

This morning I got a text message at the ungodly hour of 6.10. I was already half cursing at my mom, since she has been known not to take time very seriously when calling or texting me. However... it was my friend Nancy, whom I have known my entire life (this is not exagerated, I really have known her since I was born. We lived at the same apartment building and grew up together).
Above are pictures of Nancy 1,5 months ago, on her mom's birthday.
And the text message was to announce that her SON Danny was born earlier that night!
Somehow I cannot help but wonder 1 thing though: whether our first major crush on singer/actor Danny de Munk when we were around 9 had anything to do with their choice of name... ;)

Oops! I did it again...

stuk verkoolde cake... / some charred cake...

For the 2nd time in less than 2 years I ALMOST had a fire at my apartment. And again because my oven acted up.
Shortly before my birthday in 2006, I wanted to bake some cakes to treat my colleagues. The picture above shows the result...
While the cake was baking, I smelt something but since I had added spices to the batter I thought that might be it. When the smell grew stronger and I went to check it out, the whole kitchen was in smoke...
The very next day I got a new microwave/oven AND a new smoke alarm (which had not gone off).
Today I wanted to bake a focaccia for lunch. After a couple of minutes, I again smelled something, and sure enough, smoke was coming from the oven. Just when I wanted to open the windows, the smoke alarm went off (well, at least it worked this time!)
When I used the oven again afterwards, it 'behaved' as usual. But it is a reminder that you should be close around when you have something cooking in the oven or on the stove...

B12 - continued
Mijn B12 waarde is opnieuw omlaag gegaan.
Called my GP today for the result of Monday's blood test. My B12 has gone down again (was 90, then 190 after taking the vitamin pills, and now back to 120). The GP will write a referral so I can go to the hospital for further testing to see what causes this and what is the best treatment.

Drinks are on the house
Een impressie / an impression:

a good time was had by all ;)
I'm in a project team at work, and one of the projects was to organize drinks for the entire Trade department every six weeks. Each time another team acts as hosts.
This first time, our team were the designated hosts, and I was part of the organising comittee along with 2 other colleagues. My uncle let me borrow his Sligro-card, I was in charge of groceries. We decided on an 'After Summer'-theme, and went all out with swimming pool props, frisbees, hawaiian garlands and colourfull straws and picks.
Unfortunately, one of the other 2 colleagues was sick on the day, and it was very busy at work too, so our preperations were somewhat rushed. All in all quite a few people attended and we got a lot of enthusiastic comments! (which in itself isn't TOO hard as long as you make sure there's food and beer ;) )
After the last people left, we were left having to clean up the place and I ended up going home around 18.45 - exhausted...

Busy day off
- slept in until 10-ish.
- went to Sligro (= wholesale store) in Rotterdam to pick up supplies for the happy hour I'm organizing with 2 other colleagues at work this Thursday.
- drove right into a traffic jam on my way home (since when is 14.30 rush hour??).
- barely made it to the doctor's office in time to have another B12 blood test done.
- picked up some more stuff at the grocery store since Sligro only sold them in bulk...
- got a haircut.
- got home around 6-ish, tired...

Iftar
P.S. Ma belde zojuist op voor de voetbaluitslagen. De stroom doet het weer.
My aunt is married t a Sudanese man and they are both Muslim. Naturally they abide to the fasting during Ramadan. Especially during the weekend, the evening meal (Iftar) is very elaborate, and each weekend another family of their acquaintances hosts the Iftar. Yesterday my aunt and uncle were the hosts and they had invited me too.
My aunt had made a buffet-style table with lots of dishes, both traditional Sudanese food and other multi culti dishes such as vietnamese eggrolls, ratatouille and nasi goreng. Even for a picky eater like me there was enough to choose from! It tasted very well and it was interesting to experience some of the specific customs like eating a date at the beginning of the meal.
My mom called while I was at my aunt's. Friday morning my parents left for Karpathos (Greece), and apparently it had rained so hard Friday night evening that the electricity plant could not cope anymore and shut down... From the restaurant that my parents were at at the time, they had front row seats for the 'light show' after which all power went out... Instead of candles all the guests used their mobiles as flashlights ;)
P.S. Mom just call for today's football scores. The electricity is back on.

Circle Journal - part 8

This is the last album of te Pet Circle Journal. Although the other ladies wanted a lay out made with their enclosed photos, Marianne wanted us to use pictures of our own pets. No problem, I have plenty of guinea pig pics!

Long, long day
Daar hielden verschillende mensen presentaties, o.a. over de doelstellingen van het bedrijf en werden verschillende (nieuwe) termen uitgelegd (zoals 'KSOR' - Keeping the Show on the Road).
Every day this month, people from our team need to go to Amsterdam to attend so-called welcoming-sessions given by the take-over company. Today was my turn.
In order to get there on time, I had to take the 6am (!) metro. That meant having to get up at 4.30am (YAWN!)
In the metro I happened to see another colleague who was going to Amsterdam as well(which I didn't know beforehand), and at Rotterdam Central Station we met up with a 3rd colleague. In Amsterdam, colleague no. 4 was already waiting at the bus stop, so we arrived with quite a group at the venue.
Several presentations were given during the day, clarifying the company's goals, strategies and expressions (like 'KSOR' - Keeping the Show on the Road). In the afternoon, the Big Boss of the Dutch division even gave us a talk. Nice to see him in person for a change.
Colleague no. 5 had driven up to Amsterdam, and not wanting to travel all the way back home on public transportation, we asked for a ride. Of course there were the usual traffic jams during rush hour, but we hadn't expected a stand still and blocked exits to Zuidplein on the A15 (still don't know why the exit was blocked BTW). So we had to make a detour through Charlois to get to the metro.
All in all I didn't get home until 8pm-ish, completely exhausted. Fortunately I can sleep in late tomorrow...

Robbed

I had an unwelcome surprise when I got into my car this morning: there were only wires where my car radio used to be...
Walked around the car to investigate and sure enough, the door on the passerger's side was forced open. The lock itself still worked, but the bit in which you insert the key was dangling by a thread...
Step 1: called the office to say that, yes, I would be there, but it would take me awhile to get there (they must have thought: it's always something with her!)
Step 2: went to the police station to file a report for insurance purposes.
Step 3: went to the car repair place for an estimate (approx. EUR 1300,00) / appointment (in 3 weeks) / emergency repair to the lock (in the course of the day)
Step 4: left the car at the repair place and walked to the subway (luckily not that far)
Step 5: called my dad at work to tell the story (yes, I'm a daddy's girl. THAT, and my mom didn't answer the phone at home ;) )
Step 6: went straight to the meeting that was scheduled at work. Fortunately it had only just started.
Step 7: called the insurance company after the meeting was over to report the damage. They even complimented me on having already taken all the right steps, including filing a police report :)
It looks like the damage will be around EUR 1300,00. The entire passengers door will probably need to be replaced, due to the damage around the lock. The good news is that my insurance company will cover everything, and my insurance payment won't get higher (which worried me a bit). But if you consider that my car radio will probably fetch no more than EUR 20 on the black market, it's still quite a high price...
On the other hand, of course it sucks, but at the end of the day, it's only a THING.
