1 good reason to watch the Oscars this year...

Robert Pattinson was erbij!

This Sunday night was Oscar night. And... Robert Pattinson was there too!

Since I don't have digital television, I had to wait a few days until photos and clips appeared on the internet.

One word to describe him: HOT! Apparently he's also been voted one of the best dressed men of this years event by several websites.

This year's Oscar for best actor went to Sean penn for his role in 'Milk', in which he plays a gay character. Other actore have also won Oscars for similar roles in the past: Tom Hanks in 'Philadelphia', Charlize Theron in 'Monster'...
Coincidentally, later this year Rob is starring in a film about Salvador Dali ('Little Ashes') and his relationship with the Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca.
Who knows - perhaps he won't just be presenting but actually accepting an award next year!

New role: homeowner!

Daughter, granddaughter, friend, employee... and, as of today, homeowner as well!
The sellers accepted my final bid, which means the coming months will be very busy and exciting - so much to do!

Some days are better than others

Gisteren crashte m'n computer opeens.

I set my alarm early because I had a busy day ahead.

Yesterday my computer crashed all of a sudden. I switched it on and a black screen appeared, with some vague text about rebooting or something... Called my Personal Helpdesk Alex and he suspected the worst. Perfect timing!
I've only had this computer for 10 months, so I was optimistic about it getting fixed. Except... I could not find the receipt ANYWHERE (but at least my house is a bit less cluttered now). Fingers crossed they'd accept my bank statement as proof of purchase...

Anyways, it meant a trip to the computer doctor. They promised to check it out, but it meant having to go without a computer for the best part of this week which I wasn't exactly looking forward to (strange how you've come to rely on that thing so much!).

Also stopped by at the library since they'd let me know the copy of New Moon in Dutch that I had ordered was in, and I spent half an hour in line at City Hall to get the 2009 Rotterdam Pass.

Between all this, the realtor called whether I was still intersted in the house. Um - yes! Placed my starting bid and got a counterbid that was still WAY too high in my opinion. Placed another bid, but didn't hear anything more today, so who knows - to be continued tomorrow?

I had just gotten home when the computer store called to say they'd already fixed the problem. Apparently my computer decided to start up from the D-drive instead of the C-drive and failed miserably (DOH!). Fortunately I didn't even have to wave with my bank statement - service on the house. Talk about a nice break!

Back home I hooked the computer up again (I admit that I did a bit of cursing here and there...), anddddd we're back in business! Woohoo!

After dinner I had another appointment at the vet's for Baloo's check up. The vet was very pleased with the progress of the healing of the wound and also with the way Baloo battled through this. The bill from this weekend that I hadn't paid yet (and that I was very much dreading...) wasn't too bad either. They'd cut me some slack and only charged the medication. Another break!

All in all not too bad for a Monday!

Valentine's Date

Yesterday morning my friend Gonda unexpectedly called. She had theater tickets but the friend she was going to go with couldn't make it and would I like to come??

Um - sure!

Whaddaya know, all of a sudden I have a date for Valentine's! I admit, I'd rather go out with a cute guy (so would she actually hahaha!) but honestly, you could do worse than a night out with a good friend, right??

The show was by a Dutch comedian I had never heard of before: Karin Bruers. A middle-aged woman from Brabant who talked about what our country would be like if she was elected president. It was actually quite funny.

Afterwards, we went to our friend Vera who always has a nice Valentine's Day because it is her birthday ;). We chatted with friends for a few hours and it was close to 2 a.m. by the time I saw my bed - YAWN!

YUCK!

Baloo's wound was getting more and more infected and frankly started to reek pretty badly... Somehow I was not convinced this was good, so I called the vet again yesterday even though I have an appointment scheduled for next Monday. She agreed with me that it was better not to wait until Monday.

My parents graciously were available to take Baloo to the vet and we arranged that I could pick her up again today.

The vet reopened the wound, removed all stitches and cleaned it all up and decided NOT to close the wound up again to help the healing process. This effectively means that Baloo now has a 2" hole in het throat...
They gave me a special spray to treat the wound (which is actually pretty hard to use when you have to wrestle with a critter), dressings in case I want to cover the wound (yeah right, like that's going to happen with only 2 hands and an uncooperative guinea pig) and a fresh supply of antibiotics.

I wonder whether this treatment is more successfull...

Deja Vu

On 30 December I took Baloo to the vet because she wouldn't eat. Coincidentally, she'd had a similar problem last year around the same time. Her tummy felt a bit hard, so I administered Carprofen drops for a few days and she was back to her old self in no-time.

This Monday, when I was cleaning the girls' pen, I noticed her bearthing was a bit odd. Since it was late already, I made a mental note to check up on her again in the morning.

When I picked her up to check her breathing on Tuesday morning, I noticed she had a big lump in her troat. I was positive that had not been there the night before!

Called the office to ask whether it was ok to take a few hours off in the afternoon to go the vet. Fortunately there is sufficient staff on Tuesdays so it wasn't a problem.
Called the vet at 9 a.m. to make an appointment for that afternoon. To make a long story short: the lump had grown to tennis ball size so they kept her in order to perform surgery (€€€€) the same day. Although it was quite a difficult operation, she recovered well and I could take her (as well as a whole arsenal of meds) home again that night.

After a day or two, the wound started to swell. Just to make sure, I went to the vet again on Friday night. The wound had started to fester somewhat, but according to the vet I was doing everything right.

Over the weekend, the infection got worse and the wound also started to smell. So I called again today and was advised to clean it with a diluted betadine solution.

Baloo undergoes everything without too much complaint and has even started eating a bit by herself again. In any case, I hope this is not a repetition of last year when hardly a month went by without at least one vet visit...
