Vet visit

Gisteren en vandaag heb ik voor het eerst in lange tijd (want: drukdrukdruk) weer eens uitgebreid met de caafjes gekroeld. Daarbij viel me op dat Teddy's haardos wel erg dun was geworden (Teddy = meest linkse cavia op de banner). Haar voor de zekerheid ook maar even gewogen op de keukenweegschaal en ze bleek ook nogal afgevallen (door al dat haar dat ze nog wél heeft was me dat nog niet opgevallen...) Verder gedraagt ze zich normaal, maar het zat me toch niet lekker. Zeker niet toen ik Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs erop nasloeg en las dat dit kon duiden op ringworm, leverproblemen, hormonale problemen etc. (waaruit weer eens blijkt: nóóit een bijsluiter of medisch handboek lezen, daar word je alleen maar zieker van...)

Maar goed, voor de zekerheid toch maar even naar de dierenarts gegaan vandaag. Die zag m.b.v. een echo (!) dat mevrouw een cyste in haar buik heeft, waarschijnlijk in haar baarmoeder. Dat verklaart ook de haaruitval. Remedie: zolang ze zich goed voelt vooral niks doen. Cavia's gedijen niet zo goed onder narcose en als ze de operatie al zou overleven treden er waarschijnlijk complicaties op zoals buikvliesontsteking.

Ik heb er een beetje een gemengd gevoel bij: aan de ene kant opgelucht dat ze niks levensbedreigends heeft (vooralsnog niet althans), aan de andere kant ongerustheid over hoe lang het goed zal blijven gaan... Máár, dat kan nog wel héél lang duren dus tot die tijd is m'n voornemen om veel vaker met de meissies te kroelen ;)

Yesterday and today was the first time in a long while ('cause: busybusybusy) that I took the time to cuddle with my cavies. I noticed that Teddy's hair had gotten thin (Teddy = most left cavy on my banner). Just in case I weighed her on the kitchen scale and she also seemed to have lost some weight (which I hadn't noticed yet due to all the hair she still DOES have...) Her behaviour is still normal, but it just didn't feel entirely right. Especially when I read in Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs that these are symptoms of ringworm, liver problems, hormonal problems etc. (again proving the point that you should never, ever read the information leaflet of drugs or any medical books because it will only make you feel sicker than you initially thought you were...)

Anyways, went to the vet today to make sure what it was. She even used a sonogram machine (!) to determine the problem and eventually diagnosed Teddy with an ovarian cyst. That also accounts for the hair loss. Advised treatment: none while she acts normally! Cavies don't react well to anaesthesia and should she even live through the surgery, the likelyhood of complications due to e.g. peritonitis is big.

So... I sort of have mixed feelings about the whole thing. On one hand I'm glad that she doesn't have a lifethreatening illness (yet at least), on the other hand it's a worrying thought that it might get worse in the (near) future... However, hopefully that will take a long time and until then my resolution is to cuddle the girls a lot more than I have been doing lately ;)
