Het hotel ligt in de toeristische wijk Thamel, op loopafstand van Durbar Square (het oude centrum met tempels etc.). Verder zijn hier héél veel winkeltjes, internetcafé's en eettentjes in de buurt, dus vervelen hoef je je hier absoluut niet!
De eerste avond zijn Ed, Loes, Amir, Caroline en ik wezen eten bij het Thamel House Restaurant, vlakbij het hotel. Het zit in een 19e eeuws Nepalees gebouw met mooi uitgesneden houten raamkozijnen. Je zit er op kussens op de grond en ze serveren er authentiek Nepalese gerechten. Erg leuk om mee te maken! (al weet je op een gegeven moment niet meer zo goed hoe je moet gaan zitten...) We hebben een soort Nepalese rijsttafel gegeten met zo'n 10 verschillende gerechten. Erg lekker!
De volgende dag konden we op eigen gelegenheid naar Durbar Square (ik heb de Levende Godin Kumari gezien!) en de plaatsjes Bodnath (waar de grootste Boeddhistische Stupa van Nepal staat) en Pashupatinath (zeg maar het Varanasi van Nepal - de rivier die er doorheen stroomt komt uit in de Ganges en hier zijn ook ghats waar doden worden gecremeerd). In Bodnath leven veel gevluchtte Tibetanen en ik werd uitgenodigd door een monnik om een tempel te bekijken. Ik werd nog gezegend en al!

Vandaag zijn we met de hele groep naar Bhatakpur gegaan, 1 van de Koningssteden vlakbij Kathmandu. Het is een authentiek plaatsje waar nog veel oude tempels staan.
's Middags is een deel van de groep nog naar Patan gegaan, een andere Koningsstad. Omdat ik had gehoord dat het heel veel leek op Durbar Square (en omdat ik inmiddels een beetje tempel-moe was geworden...) ben ik teruggegaan naar het hotel.

Vanavond hebben we het afscheidsetentje en morgen zit het er alweer op!
From Pokhara we went to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu. Everything went well until we arrived at the edge of the city and drove straight into a traffic jam... Cops were needed to end the chaos and after approx. 1,5 hrs we finally were on our way again.
Our hotel is in the middle of Thamel, an area of town within walking distance of Durbar Square (the old city centre with temples etc.). There are many hotels (read: tourists) here and lots of shops, cyber cafes and restaurants too so there's no need to get bored!
On our first night here, Ed, Loes, Amir, Caroline and I went out to diner at Thamel House Restaurant, around the corner of the hotel. It's located in a 19th century traditional Nepali building with beautifully carved windows. You sit on pillows on the floor and they serve authentic Nepali food. Great experience! (although it's hard to figure out how to sit after a while...) We ordered some kind of Nepali menu with about 10 different dishes. Very tasty!
The next day everybody was free to visit Durbar Square (I saw the Living Goddess Kumari!) and the towns of Bodnath (with the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal) and Pashupatinath (the Varanasi of Nepal so to speak - the river that runs through it flows into the Ganges and cremations are performed here as well).
Bodnath houses many refugee Tibetans and I was invited by a monk to visit a Tibetan Buddhist temple. He even blessed me!
Today we went to Bhatakpur, one of the Royal Cities near Kathmandu. It's a traditional town with lots of old temples. In the afternoon, part of the group went to Patan, another Royal City. Since I had heard it was a lot like Kathmandu's Durbar Square I decided to go back to the hotel instead.
Tonight is our farewell dinner and tomorrow we're going home!
